Why Visit Cēsis

Cēsis is the birthplace of the Latvian national flag (dating back to 1279 battle chronicles). Unlike faster-paced tourist hubs, Cēsis invites slow travel: cobblestone lanes, restored wooden facades, independent craft coffee shops, and one of Northern Europe’s most remarkable castle ruins where visitors navigate dark spiral stone staircases by the light of handheld candle lanterns.

Key Attractions in Cēsis

1. Cēsis Medieval Castle & Lantern Exploration

Founded by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword in 1209, this fortress served as the headquarters of the Livonian Order Master. Upon entry, you are handed a traditional tin lantern with a lit candle to climb into the dark medieval Western Tower and descend into the subterranean prison vaults.

2. Cēsis New Castle & History Museum

Adjoining the medieval ruins, the 18th-century Manor House (New Castle) houses the Cēsis History and Art Museum. Ascend the Lademaher Tower to witness an expansive view over Castle Park, St. John’s Church, and the forested valley.

3. Castle Park & Maija Park

Wander through the romantic 19th-century landscaped Castle Park with its swan pond, grand stone staircase, and reflection pools. Maija Park features black swans and modern art installations.

4. Old Town Cobblestone Alleys & St. John's Church

Explore Rīgas iela, the pedestrian heart of Old Cēsis, lined with artisan craft boutiques, local ceramic workshops, and bakeries. Step inside St. John’s Church (built in the 1280s), the largest medieval basilica in Vidzeme outside of Riga.

Artisan Gastronomy & Coffee

Do not miss Mala—a bohemian café and cultural space featuring locally roasted coffees and plant-forward lunches—and Jāņroze bookstore café for fresh pastries and herbal infusions made with wildflowers from the Gauja meadows.
