Why Visit Liepāja

Known as "the city where the wind is born" (pilsēta, kurā piedzimst vējš), Liepāja offers open Baltic Sea access (unlike the sheltered Gulf of Riga). Its 8-kilometer beach features fine, silky white sand where amber stones wash ashore after autumnal storms. The city boasts rich musical roots, Art Nouveau timber villas, and the unforgettable military ghost district of Karosta.

Key Sights & Experiences

1. Liepāja Central Beach & Seaside Park

The beach here has been awarded Blue Flag status for decades. It is bordered by the Seaside Park (Jūrmalas parks), one of Latvia’s largest planted parks, featuring over 140 species of trees, Art Nouveau fountains, and wooden open-air summer mansions.

2. Great Amber Concert Hall (Lielais Dzintars)

Designed by Austrian architect Volker Giencke, this striking 8-story glass building glows like a monolithic Baltic amber gemstone on the skyline. It serves as the home of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and hosts acoustic performances of international acclaim.

3. Karosta (The Naval War Port)

Built in the late 1890s by Russian Tsar Alexander III as a secret, self-contained naval fortress, Karosta occupies the northern third of the city. Visit the ornate gold-domed St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, walk across the Oskars Kalpaks swing bridge, explore the ruined Northern Forts washed by crashing sea waves, and tour the historic Karosta Military Prison.

Local Dish: Liepājas Menciņi

When dining in Liepāja, order Liepājas menciņi—the city’s signature culinary dish made with hot-smoked Baltic cod baked in an earthenware clay pot with potatoes, onions, and heavy cream.

Getting to Liepāja

Direct express buses depart multiple times daily from Riga Central Bus Station to Liepāja (journey approx. 3 hours). Trains run on selected days from Riga. For road trippers, the A9 highway provides a direct, well-paved route through Saldus and Skrunda.
